Steampunk – Claymills Victorian Pumping Station

Over the festive period I made a visit to Claymills Victorian Pumping Station, excitedly the Pumping Station was in steam. (Check the website for forthcoming steam days)

In 1885 the pumping station was completed and pumped sewage from Burton-upon-Trent to farmland 3 miles away. The site closed in 1971 & restoration work began in 1993.

Claymills img1578 1583 1604There are four large beam engines by Gimson of Leicester, 1885, these are  in pumping house C-D.
The heat smell and steam was overwhelming but nice.

It was worth it though, watching the beams go up and down was mesmerizing

I can imagine how much of a luxury a hot bath with running water must have been, instead of a tin bath in front of the fire.

Christmas at Calke Abbey

During the weekends of December Calke Abbey, Derbyshire opens the house for visitors to experience Christmas. The National Trust normally closes the house during winter months so December is a very special month. I went along just as it was getting dusk to see it in all it’s magical, colourful glory.

Calke Christmas 2013 - DSC_0890 0893 0895Traditional beautiful real trees are dotted all around the property.

My favourite is just past the entrance door by the grand staircase and rocking horse.

Calke Christmas 2013 - DSC_0905 0907 1714I love how you can look at the beautiful decorations on the tree as you climb the stairs.

At the top of the stairs you are almost eye to eye with the vintage Fairy that sits on the tallest branch.

Calke Christmas 2013 - DSC_0914 0915Upon entering the Saloon you are greeted with lots of Christmas cards. These have been hand written by adults & children visiting Calke Abbey and placed on the Billiard table.

A tradition started by the Harper-Crewe family that used to live in the house.

Calke Christmas 2013A lovely sitting room, I can imagine how cosy this room must have been with a gorgeous log burning fire.

Perhaps there would be music playing in the background whilst you enjoy a mince pie and glass of mulled wine.

After wandering around the rooma inside I ventured outside to see the house & trees lit up with illumintated lights that changed colour whilst you watched.

Christmas at Baddesley Clinton

I had a throughly enjoyable visit to Baddesley Clinton, near Birmingham recently.

I couldn’t have called in at a better time. The volunteers and staff were busy decorating the house for the Christmas period. What a fabulous day, it really got me in the mood for the upcoming festive time of year.

The house is festooned with fabulous decorations, huge twinkling trees and the smell of clove studded oranges floats through the rooms. It really is a magical place.Baddesley Clinton DSC_1503 1586 1620The pantry table is full of goodies, Christmas cake, Brussel Spout stem (Christmas simply isn’t complete without Spouts!), herbs, spices, dried fruit, bread and apples from the orchard. I could really imagine the hussle and bustle that must have taken place in this room.

As you enter the Great Hall the most glorious tree stands majestically in front of you, covered in lights, paper chains, silver bells, birds, glittery baubles and paper flags with brown paper parcels ready for Christmas day.DSC_1523 c

Baddesley Clinton DSC_1578 1581 1587My favourite room is the library, I just love collections of books and their ornate patterns on leather spines. Originally a ships figurehead the Oak carved Eagle now becomes a lectern.

Baddesley Clinton DSC_1591 1593 1595Another wonderful Christmas tree stands nestled next to the armchair in the corner, over the fireplace is my favourite decoration …a crepe paper garland. It reminds me of Christmas at my Grandparents farm.

Hot Rods and Classic cars come to town

For Fathers Day the hot Rods and Classic Cars came to Loughborough.

A gorgeous day with gorgeous cars what more could men want… actually alot of women and kids were admiring the super shiny vehicles. There’s my lack of car knowledge showing straight away. I liked them cause they were shiny, not because of the their engine size, horsepower or whatever it is!!

The East Midlands Wedding Show, Radisson Blu Hotel Nottingham – March 2013

A couple of weeks ago I visited The East Midlands Wedding Show organised by Stanley’s Exhibitions held at the Radisson Blu Hotel near East Midlands Airport.

Upon arrival I was spellbound with a card trick from David Fox Magician, I knew he would find the card I’d selected but it didn’t stop me from being astounded how he achieved it. Very entertaining and a thoroughly nice man to chat to.
