I have wanted to shoot this photograph for a while and what better day to do it than Valentines Day.
Happy Valentines Day
Over the festive period I made a visit to Claymills Victorian Pumping Station, excitedly the Pumping Station was in steam. (Check the website for forthcoming steam days)
In 1885 the pumping station was completed and pumped sewage from Burton-upon-Trent to farmland 3 miles away. The site closed in 1971 & restoration work began in 1993.
Fabulous blacksmith onsite, Hayley Powell from Forever Forged
Gimson & Co builder’s plaque on the cylinder casing of ‘C’ engine. Climbing the stairs to gain access to the top floor was quite a challenge with a camera bag as they are quite narrow.
It was worth it though, watching the beams go up and down was mesmerizing
Deep in the basement is a bathroom with small bath that workers and families used on a rota basis.
I can imagine how much of a luxury a hot bath with running water must have been, instead of a tin bath in front of the fire.
During the weekends of December Calke Abbey, Derbyshire opens the house for visitors to experience Christmas. The National Trust normally closes the house during winter months so December is a very special month. I went along just as it was getting dusk to see it in all it’s magical, colourful glory.
My favourite is just past the entrance door by the grand staircase and rocking horse.
At the top of the stairs you are almost eye to eye with the vintage Fairy that sits on the tallest branch.
A tradition started by the Harper-Crewe family that used to live in the house.
Perhaps there would be music playing in the background whilst you enjoy a mince pie and glass of mulled wine.
After wandering around the rooma inside I ventured outside to see the house & trees lit up with illumintated lights that changed colour whilst you watched.
I had a throughly enjoyable visit to Baddesley Clinton, near Birmingham recently.
I couldn’t have called in at a better time. The volunteers and staff were busy decorating the house for the Christmas period. What a fabulous day, it really got me in the mood for the upcoming festive time of year.
The house is festooned with fabulous decorations, huge twinkling trees and the smell of clove studded oranges floats through the rooms. It really is a magical place. The pantry table is full of goodies, Christmas cake, Brussel Spout stem (Christmas simply isn’t complete without Spouts!), herbs, spices, dried fruit, bread and apples from the orchard. I could really imagine the hussle and bustle that must have taken place in this room.
As you enter the Great Hall the most glorious tree stands majestically in front of you, covered in lights, paper chains, silver bells, birds, glittery baubles and paper flags with brown paper parcels ready for Christmas day.
Another wonderful Christmas tree stands nestled next to the armchair in the corner, over the fireplace is my favourite decoration …a crepe paper garland. It reminds me of Christmas at my Grandparents farm.
For Fathers Day the hot Rods and Classic Cars came to Loughborough.
A gorgeous day with gorgeous cars what more could men want… actually alot of women and kids were admiring the super shiny vehicles. There’s my lack of car knowledge showing straight away. I liked them cause they were shiny, not because of the their engine size, horsepower or whatever it is!!
Once a year Shepshed Watermill in Leicestershire holds a Wartime 1940’s event. It’s a lovely day out with vintage stalls, vehicles from yesteryear and the mill is also open for visitors to walk around,
This year the Blacksmiths forge was open with demonstrations.
Selection of gas masks for children adults and babies.
Stunning car, owner informed me it’s tricky to drive, only has 3 gears and is normally black so this green version is quite rare. Nice to see the occupents dressed in period costume.
