Shadows fascinate me
Crisp clear frosty start to the 29th of February 2016.
Another 4 years until this date arrives again so I decided to take random mobile phone photos of my day.
Not really what I expected to do for the weekend but had a fascinating trip to Mountsorrel locks near Leicester where the Canal and River Trust are restoring the lock gates.
The lock has been drained – first time in 30 years. No treasures were found at the bottom but it does have the original red bricks dating back from between 1780 and 1794. The top and bottom lock gates are being replaced, together they weigh nearly 4 tonnes! The lock chamber itself is a massive 28 metres long, 4.6 metres wide and 3.4 metres deep and it can hold 438,000 litres of water, standing inside it was awe inspiring and almost hard to believe how much water should be above my head.
Also had a lovely little trip along the canal in a barge thanks to Sileby Mill Boatyard.
The event is on again tomorrow (28th Feb 2016)
There’s also a lovely pub next to the canal (The Waterside Inn)
It was an absolute delight to attend the first Pop Up Wedding Village organised by the super talented Honeysuckle & Castle and Save the Date Magazine. Held within the beautiful grounds and rustic Riding School at National Trust Calke Abbey, Derbyshire. It was a mixed weather day with heavy rain showers jumbled up with a good dose of sunshine, but thoroughly enjoyable in all respects. The traders attending this event are outstanding with so much creativity and talent.

We spent a few very enjoyable few days in the Cotswolds in beautiful Bourton-on-the-Water (Venice of the Cotswolds) A series of elegant low bridges cross the River Windrush that flows through the picturesque centre. The river has an average depth of just 10 inches as it flows through Bourton
A glorious Spring day prompted a spot of relaxing in the grounds of The Dial House with afternoon tea.
Tea for two came with delightfully pretty teacups, delicious smoked Salmon, Roast Beef, Egg & Cress finger sandwiches followed by Scones with cream & jam and a selection of scrummy cakes.
Saint Lawrences church is a stunning church with magnificent painted ceiling and Oak screen that separates the chancel from the nave, over one door is a skull and cross bones.
Bourton on the Water by night
The following days weather was not as glorious…rain. However this did not dampen our spirits and visited The Model Village, a 1/9th scale replica of Bourton village complete with named shop fronts, church with choir & bridges that arch over replica streams. Created by a previous landlord of the Old New Inn it took five years to build and was officially opened on the Coronation Day of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the late Queen Mother) in 1937. Even the plants and trees are miniature! I remember visiting as a child and thoroughly enjoyed going back seeing them miniature high street buildings and feeling like a giant.
There was just enough time at the end of our visit for a game of Where’s Wally (minus the glasses & stripey hat!)
