Roman Leicester under our feet uncovered

When I heard about a 2 day event for the public to see spectacular Roman mosaics discovered by the University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS)  in the heart of Leicester city centre decided it was an opportunity to not be missed.

For those unable to visit here are photos (probably too many) for what lay under the old Stibbe factory  between Great Central Street and Highcross Street.

Archaeologists have discovered one of the largest Roman mosaic floors in the city, two Roman streets containing a number of buildings and lots of artifacts. So far these objects have been found…pottery, a flute, a knife handle, brooches, beads, coins and hair pins. The viewing platforms around the edge of the site were fantastic and guides brought the area to life explaining about the buildings that once stood there, it was also great to see Archaeologists still working and discovering more items.

We queued for 2.5 hours for a short but exciting visit, thank goodness the sun was shining!

May 6th and 7th were the dates decided to open, due to popular demand the opening has been extended for this week.

Inside a canal lock gate

Not really what I expected to do for the weekend but had a fascinating trip to Mountsorrel locks near Leicester where the Canal and River Trust are restoring the lock gates.

The lock has been drained – first time in 30 years. No treasures were found at the bottom but it does have the original red  bricks dating back from between 1780 and 1794. The top and bottom lock gates are being replaced, together they weigh nearly 4 tonnes! The lock chamber itself is a massive 28 metres long, 4.6 metres wide and 3.4 metres deep and it can hold 438,000 litres of water, standing inside it was awe inspiring and almost hard to believe how much water should be above my head.

Also had a lovely little trip along the canal in a barge thanks to Sileby Mill Boatyard.

The event is on again tomorrow (28th Feb 2016)
There’s also a lovely pub next to the canal (The Waterside Inn)

Tower Poppies

Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London, what an amazing art installation.
Created by ceramic artist Paul Cummins & stage designer Tom Piper marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.
Seeing it last week as the final waves of ceramic Poppies were being planted was just breathtaking. I stood for quiet sometime imagining that each one represents a life & creating in my mind a sea of soldiers standing shoulder to shoulder. Today on Armistice day  the last of the 888,246 Poppies was planted.

These are just a few of the photos I shot.

Last few days for Sock Gallery open exhibition – Loughborough

Over 345 pieces were submitted into this years Sock Gallery open exhibition, the judges then selected 179 to be hung in the gallery.
Here is my entry the judges chose to hang in this years exhibition, a photograph on canvas titled “Dandelion Stars”
Susan Guy_Dandelion StarsAfter running for 4 weeks the exhibition that features local artists is coming to an end this weekend 6th September. Now is the time to make a visit to Loughborough Town Hall to see the free exhibition sponsored by Moss Solicitors and purchase some local art.

It doesn’t seem 5 minutes let alone 4 weeks since I was invited to the preview evening to proudly see my selected entry hanging alongside all the other chosen works of art.

There’s such a fantastic variety on show this year, pencil & ink drawings, pastel, oils, photography, pieces of artwork painted on a variety of mediums from canvas to wood to cardboard boxes. I particularly like the collages that incorporate different textures as seen in this image depicting Lime tree avenue at Calke Abbey by artist Tracey Lamb who used watercolours recycled paper and stitching (apologies for reflection on image I only did some quick snaps with my compact camera)

Pop Up Wedding Village

It was an absolute delight to attend the first Pop Up Wedding Village organised by the super talented Honeysuckle & Castle and Save the Date Magazine. Held within the beautiful grounds and rustic Riding School at National Trust Calke Abbey, Derbyshire. It was a mixed weather day with heavy rain showers jumbled up with a good dose of sunshine, but thoroughly enjoyable in all respects. The traders attending this event are outstanding with so much creativity and talent.

Hot Rods and Classic cars come to town

For Fathers Day the hot Rods and Classic Cars came to Loughborough.

A gorgeous day with gorgeous cars what more could men want… actually alot of women and kids were admiring the super shiny vehicles. There’s my lack of car knowledge showing straight away. I liked them cause they were shiny, not because of the their engine size, horsepower or whatever it is!!
